I was 4 years old and stepped on the bus to go to school, to be confronted by a bunch of kids with West Ham bags, asking me which team I supported. Although I couldn't read at the time, and didn't have any allegiance, I did recognise the badge, and decided then and there that West Ham were my team.
It was quite a few years after that before I went to a game, but Bubbles was sung on the school bus every day. And we got the words right then.

It was a contract school bus in an Essex village. Nothing strange.

There was no parent on the bus.
And it wasn't strange at all. It was a small bus, that drove around the villages and picked up the kids to take them to school. It was dedicated just to the school run, and only the kids could get on. It wasn't a public service.

School buses in America and CANADA routinely pick up kids unsupervised except for the driver

But on the same theme. The late 70's and early 80's were different to today.
We did lots of things and had freedoms that would terrify modern parents. Wasn't unusual to go out and play with the other kids, over the fields and in the local woods from first thing in the morning, until dusk or hunger called us home.
